Antonis has just been in and installed our new speedtouch modem and we are now able to download at 300 and something kbs (in theory). Now this might not be something to excite all you broadband types out there but here on Symi where we have been pootling along at anything between 32 and 50 kbs on a good day, this is real whizz bang stuff... :|

Not sure if this means I'll think any quicker though! :geek:

Well, it was [u]almost/[u] real time ;) Now it seems that high-speed Internet access = no telephones in the SV office so it looks like they're back to occasional webcam updates for a while

So this morning there was a powercut for the whole island from about 6 a.m. Luckily our part of the harbour came back on at 09.00 but some areas in the harbour and in Chorio are still without electricity now, at 11 o'clock. Of course, in Symi, when there is no electricity there is also no water as the pumps don't work...

We don't know if the power problems were caused by overloading the system but it is rather unlikely that DEH would have scheduled major routine maintenance at the busiest time of the year. :(

According to Antonis the problem is with OTE, the telephone company, who still have to upgrade something for it all to work for us so we will just have to be patient until they get round to us.

Hope it's soon as there are some pretty amazing boats coming and going in the harbour at this time of the year and it would be nice to be able to let the webcam run and share them with you all.

At the moment Altair, a big Italian motor yacht that comes in every year, is here, and Ivory, an elegant Cypriot cruise ship is anchored out in the middle. They are ferrying guests ashore in bright orange tenders. Altair is the one you can see in today's webcam shot.
