September 2020 booked

Postby Gemma1 » 24 Aug 2019, 09:37

I know it's ages off yet but I'm really missing not going to Symi this year and after obsessively checking prices on an almost daily basis I've bitten the bullet and booked 2 weeks in Symi for September 2020. I rang Olympic and got an extra £20 off the online price so it's working out £94 more than I paid in 2018 when I only went for 12 nights so I don't think that's bad and at least when I'm reading the latest trip reports I can look forward in anticipation - even if it is a long way off ;)

Impressed with that forward planning and Olympic offering a good price for September so far in advance too.

Not sure I'd call it a good price as it's still £740 for 2 weeks but flying from LBA saves me the £80 mini-bus fare to Manchester and I couldn't do it cheaper independently by the time I've paid for flights, transfers and accommodation for 2 weeks. There's plenty of time to save up - and look forward to all that delicious Symi food ;)

I'm still checking prices for October this year to see if I can sneak a cheeky week in this year but it's still £557 at the moment.

I have also been away from Symi last year - but like you Gemma, could not resist a deal going from Manchester at the end of September for 3 weeks!!! Its a big birthday so I just thought why not!!!! The deal was fantastic - £585 for 3 weeks... that is less then for one week from Newcastle... where I would normally fly from - so very happy - I know its very quiet at the end of the season - but all I want to do is walk, swim, eat and read then it is perfect. I may also spend a few days on another island....

That sounds a fantastic deal, is that with Olympic and if so where are you staying. As a solo traveller I haven't seen anything so reasonable.

Hi Jean,I know - I havnt either!! I kept on thinking they had made a mistake.... It was with Olympic -solo = going out from Manchester to Symi on 28th September. The 3 weeks may have been the reason? Staying at Taxaiarchis. It was the last room - but just had a look and on that date you can still go for 3 weeks to the Anastasia for £618 - one week is £559! Its £24 extra for 10 kiols of luggage in the hold.

It's definitely not worth going for a week plee when you can have 3 weeks for that price ☺

We re-booked our accommodation as we left last year, but have just booked our flights. It was really difficult from the North West. As usual, most flights were arriving late in the evening, meaning a few hours in a hotel on Rhodes before the early boat across. We have done this for a few years. We looked into going via Athens, but couldn't get it to work well. Eventually, we are taking a risk by arriving on Rhodes at 16:55 with hand luggage and hoping we can make the evening boat (if the timetable stays pretty much the same)
It seems to be getting more difficult to travel, the only decent morning flight with Tui was very expensive.

I know what you mean Katy.
It seemed to be simpler back in the days when most of the flights were in the morning (including some very early mornings!) and you could be certain, even before the ferry schedules were published, that there would be a late afternoon/early evening ferry on a Wednesday. There was always time to kill on Rhodes but you knew you'd get to Symi the same day and I particularly loved the flight down over the Aegean spotting the islands on the way. I miss that.

Now my "usual" journey is to take a Saturday afternoon flight and stay a night on Rhodes. Fortunately, for the last eight years we have been doing this route, there has always been an early morning ferry on the Sunday but that isn't guaranteed of course I just have to book the flights and hope for the best.

Symi is definitely not the easiest island to get to but we all know that it's worth it when you get there :) To be fair I'm quite happy with the afternoon flight out of LBA in the knowledge that Olympic will look after me on Rhodes and I'll be in my room at Anastasia the following morning. I think that's better than the year I had to catch the last train from Leeds to Manchester Airport and sit at Manchester until 4am waiting for check in to open. I arrived on Symi the same day but feeling like a zombie ;)
