Kirkham is going to be a very dry place for the next two weeks starting next Wednesday, me thinks.

I've never tried Ouzo but I may have a go this time, what are you supposed take with it? Or is this a question that will result in lots of 'one liners'?

Water; ice; or water and ice!
I did make an interesting cocktail one year that was concocted from ouzo and chilled banana juice. Tasted a lot better than it sounds. All the Symi supermarkets seemed to have litre cartons of banana juice that year, I suspect it had been ordered or delivered by mistake as I haven't seen any in recent years. There are plenty of fresh bananas though so the drink is still possible.

Personally I can't stand the stuff as hate aniseed. Now a nice glass of chilled Greek white wine is a different matter ;)

I was once on Crete and was, I use the word loosely, "treated' to a dirty black Greek, which is a version of black Russian. You substitute Ouzo for the Vodka. It looks disgusting but tastes good. Just don't have too many!!

Aniseed? Similar to Pernod then? If I remember correctly you take blackcurrant with Pernod. I think I will try it with ice. Is it strong? And should I be careful with the size of measures?

Yes, generally similar to Pernod in taste, there are dozens of different brands and they vary quite a bit. Is it strong? Yes. Should you be careful with measures? Like all spirits on Symi it's poured by eye, they don't use marked measures, so you can get a different amount in the same size glass each time. I'd ask for a small bottle of water with the ouzo the first time you try it. This won't be thought odd, as it's often how Greeks drink it, and if it's too strong you can water it down a little. If not you've got a spare bottle of water which is always useful in Symi summer heat.

Polly I'm sure Muppet and Eleanor will be able to give you lots of advice on the ouzo front, won't you girls? just be careful on your first encounter and beware, water dilutes it but it can just bring back the memory the next morning when you have another glass of water - of course our friend Kojak is well used to it after all the years and it has no effect on him !!!!!!

I read this as I got back from the taverna in Mandraki Nissyros and had a little chuckle to myself. You have a treat in store Pollychops when you sample your first ouzo, especially so on Symi. Plenty of ice, beautiful view, sound and smell of the sea and good company that's all you'll need to become hooked. Enjoy every minute.

Strangely, I hate Pernod but lurve ouzo. Yiannis at the Rainbow invented a "Kojak Special" many years ago for me. Ouzo, fresh orange juice, a splash of 7up and just a hint of Grenadine in a long glass with ice. - Part of your 5 a day! :D :D :D :D :D
