I can understand all-inclusives if you have a family with a few young children as it can be more economic but you do sacrifice going out to sample the local bars and restaurants which is what I think is an important part of any holiday.

Rhodes day trippers

As far as I know the dreaded All-Inclusive holiday has yet to reach Symi. Apart from anything else the whole public ferry transfer arrangement is contrary to the spirit of AI where the objective seems to be to cocoon the holidaymakers from any contact with the resort they're nominally visiting.
Let's face it, Symi can be hard work for families with several very young children because of the terrain although the locals couldn't be more helpful, child-friendly, and supportive.

There was the belief that travel broadens the mind but the whole educational element of travelling to other places is lost in an all inclusive resort environment.

Rhodes day trippers

I didn't go on a day trip but I used to print the Timsway brochure and the company I worked for paid for me to go on a two week holiday out of it rather than give me a wage rise! The only island I'd heard of was Symi so went for 2 weeks in end of September beginning of October I think in 1984 or 1985. It's heaven on earth!! Also took my now 22 year old son a dozen or so times from when he was tiny to last year when we went in November for the Panormitis festival. We only went on one all inclusive, had one breakfast and that was enough!

The day visitors from Rhodes, are not such a problem for Symi, as they are for somewhere like Lindos, we get (at most) three tour boats, and a ferry at the same time, poor old Lindos can have thirty or so tour buses clogging up the top road, and three tour boats down on the beach, these crocodiles of people converge on the road to the acropolis, climb up there, come back, get back on the coach,or boat, without even have stopped for a drink or a meal, the amount of people in the streets between 10.00 and 2.00 has to be seen to be believed. i'm a great "people watcher" so love to sit in one of the wee tavernas/cafes near the bus stop and watch the world go bye, just knowing that in an hour or so peace will return is enough for me.(not every day I hasten to add).
What's this about boats Kojak? I always thought you had an affinity with wardrobes (the walls in the Anastoula arn't all that thick)

Rhodes day trippers

We recall a couple of years back when issues with seaworthiness certificates and insurance resulted in no day trip boats and the harbour-side shop owners looked very glum. I suspect restaurants like The International might have difficulties without the influx of organised day tours. We notice that Nos Beach becomes very busy when the day boats come in despite it being a fair walk. We get the impression that many people remain fearful of travel and prefer to be fully organised by others or as it has become "all inclusive" : better than the dreaded "staycation" which was suggested as a stay at home alternatives in times of austerity. A day out, say on a train with a decent lunch in the UK with its variable weather (although we have been lucky this year) is not austere !
