Drone flights over Symi

Postby Allan » 20 Oct 2015, 19:57

A very lucky (or rich!) Symi resident has got a fancy new drone fitted with an amazing camera.
Here are a couple of his videos, best viewed full-screen and in HD:

There were flights over Yialos 2 weeks ago. They won't be doing it this week- poor visibility due to rain.

Amazed at the distance that the drone can be controlled from and the quality of video is excellent.

That would be a great way to show some of those lesser known paths that criss cross Symi.

I agree, D&E. The range he gets is very impressive. The videos were good enough to prompt me to go search for the specification on this drone. It claims a control range of 2Km which is probably the distance from the centre of the village to Pedi, he must have been flying close to the limit.

I hope he makes some more videos during the winter when the visibility tends to be better. And yes, some views of the tracks across the island would be good too.

What a DJI is capable of rangewise and what you can /should do with it, are very different things :-)
standard transmitters on the DJI can be swapped out for more powerful modules and you can get about 5KM out of them (NOT approved)
Friend of mine has stood on the northeast coast and flown his out over holy island and back. (Not legal)

Don't know about other countries but in the UK you are not supposed to fly further than line of sight which is considered to be 500M horizontally or 400M vertically. (even if you have a live video feed from it) Unless you have CAA permission. this can be even less if you are near restricted airspace.

there are a lot of other restrictions, governing flight over public assemblies, flight near buildings or structures or vessels etc

Rangewise the DJIs are clever enough that if they exceed transmission range they will either retrace their steps until they re-acquire or they will fly back to pre arraged GPS co-ordinats, usually their takeoff position

Nicholas gets some nice still pictures too.
Here's an unusual view of the harbour businesses changing from summer to winter mode:
