Chat about anything to do with the island of Symi

Sad news

Postby Allan » 01 Dec 2015, 18:19

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news so close to Christmas but I thought our long time users would want to know that Derek Smith, long time Symi resident, has passed away.

Derek was something of a fixture at the Meltemi Bar back in the day and was one of the first people I met on the island. A real gentleman and always happy to chat, Derek was a mine of information on island life. I still have his book about building a boat on Symi and must dig it out to re-read it in his memory.

RIP Derek I'm going to miss our chats.

I was very sad to hear the news about Derek yesterday :( . I only knew him over the past few years from meeting him in the Sunrise but he was a lovely man and I missed seeing him on Symi in September. I will treasure the signed copy of his book that he gave me on my previous trip. RIP Derek

When we first met him in1994 he had a Bobby Charlton hair cut.
He and Lyn used to go swimming every afternoon off the clock tower steps and as he came out the water first thing was to throw his hair back into place.
It's just a lovely memory I have of him.

So sorry to hear that Derick had passed away, I remember spending many evenings with him for a few beers in Pat and Ali,s bar after I had finished doing my office duties in the Symi Visitor office with Niko Sikalos as the Timsway Rep,to say he was a pleasure to know would be an understatement, really liked the Guy. R. I. P. mate.
