flights and ferries

Hoping to book 2 weeks on Symi next month, (June2009). We will be travelling independently as there isn't much choice available for package deals with the tour operators. I,ve found flights which land in Rhodes approx 13.30hrs on Wed. 3rd June, but when I've checked the ferry times, there won't be one that day apart from early morning. Are there certain 'change over' days? (last year we went to Halki and it seemed to be a Wednesday). Can anyone recommend the best day / time to land in Rhodes to allow for decent transfer times to Symi? Thanks!

Hi Mandy, If you look at the ANES schedule, there should be a Proteus running from Rhodes to Symi at 19.15 on Wednesday, except for on the period 25 May to 6 June when it is out for inspection. In theory at least there is also the Marina which leaves Rhodes at 18.00 but this presumes that it is running on time on the south bound leg from Pireaus to Rhodes and we haven't been told yet if it will be running in June.

Hi Mandy welcome to the Chat Page.

If the flight you're considering is on time you might just be able to catch the 15.00 Dodekanisos Pride. I've never quite managed it despite the valiant attempt by a Rhodes taxi driver a couple of years ago to get us to Kolona quickly (I still shiver when I think of that journey!).

As for the best day/time to arrive, traditionally the 'changeover' days for UK travellers have been Wednesday and Saturday/Sunday. That's still when you'll find the biggest choice of charter flights.

You'll have to check ferry timetables, which change regularly at this time of year, to decide when is the best time to arrive.

Good luck!

In the light of Adriana's comment about the Proteus and the period during which it will be out of service, is there any information about how May 27th's clutch of visitors will reach Symi if arriving after the departure of the 15.00 Dodekanisos Pride?

Hi all
We're travelling on the 3rd June - flights from Manchester due into Rhodes mid-afternoon. From what I'm reading it looks as though we may be spending the night on Rhodes - this has never happened to us before. We have written to Olympic today to ask them to confirm what's happening. If they tell us something new/different we'll let you know.

:) Anes have just replied - they will have Symi 11 running on Wed 3rd June at 18.30 (although this information won`t appear on their timetables until the end of next week)
Hope this helps (don`t know if they `re making similar arrangements for any other dates but it may be worth people checking)

We've decided that if we have to spend the night in Rhodes then we must still look on it as part of our holiday and not allow it to spoil the week. We hope we'll be able to dump our luggage then take off for a visit to the Archaealogical Museum, followed by a Mythos . . . an ouzo. . . a decent meal . . . bottle of wine. . . Just hope we'll be fit the next morning! ;)

We arrinve in Rhodes at 1.30 AM on Thursday the 4th and although we have an hotel booked for the night we won't be spending much time in it as it looks like we will have to get the 08.30 Dodecanese ferry unless we want to go via Panormitis on the Symi 11 at 09.00 as there will be no late boat that evening by the looks of it.

Looks like you might get some value out of your hotel room, Oor Wullie, as the Dodecanese Seaways timetable shows a 15:00 (3pm) sailing from Rhodes to Leros, calling at Symi, by the Dodecanese Pride.

[/quote]But doesn't the Express run at 08.30 on the 4th, arriving Symi 09.25?

The Express does run at 08.30 but I was hoping for a mid morning ferry as our flight does not get in till 01.30 by the time we get to the hotel it will be about 03.00 then up again at 07.00 to get the Express is a bit of a rush. Anyway Allan you forget I'm a thrifty Scot and I'd like to get some use out of the room and get some breakfast after paying for it, plus we will probably be met off the boat in Symi and dragged Kicking and Screaming to a taverna or 10 before we get to our apartment at Dinos and I would prefer to have more than 4 hours sleep behind me when that happens, but I'm sure I'll cope if I have to
